Eat Greek

A collection of Greek tavernas and restaurants in Sydney.

1821 (122 Pitt St, Sydney) David Tsirekas’ amazing new venture offers classic dishes with refined twist. The produce at 1821 is from quality small-scale suppliers such as Southern Fresh Seafood. The wine list is reason alone to visit.

The Corinthian Rotisserie (283 Marrickville Road, Marrickville) A Marrickville institution (open until the very early morning) with old wood-panelling, plastic tablecloths and faded photos ooze old school charm. Feast on traditional dishes from moussaka to the starring dish – barbecued lamb on the spit (don’t let the slow-roasted lamb heads, which are often in the window put you off).

The Great Taste of Greece (57 Park Road, Kogarah Bay) Owned and run by the lovely Nikos and Eleftheria who came to live in Australia a few years ago from Greece. This is some of the best Greek food in Sydney. Eleftheria’s eggplant rolls are to die for and the bakalarios and skordalia have been known to move Kosta close to tears.

Ble Greek Kouzina (Shop 2, 203-207 Ramsgate Road, Ramsgate Beach) A wonderful new taverna, with tables set on Ramsgate Beach’s own new “platia.” Chef Natalia Gaspari, formerly of Alpha brings classics from the grill such as snapper, octopus and kontosouvli with classic sides of lemon roast potatoes and hortiaki salad.

The Good Filo (336-342 Rocky Point Road, Ramsgate) Another new stater in Southern Sydney’s Greek renaissance, the Good Filo brings a touch of Thessaloniki with a range of Greek favourites from bougatsa to tsoureki. Home style lunches are also on offer which include yemista, youvetsi, pastitsio and more.

Alpha (238 Castlereagh Street, Sydney) Slick “Grecian Modernist” setting with homemade spanakopita, slow-roasted lamb shoulder and whole grilled fish a real standout. The taramasalata is also brilliant. Alpha Foodstore, located next door has delicious take away spinach, chicken or lamb pies to take away, rizogalo and more.

The Apollo (44 Macleay Street, Potts Point) Traditional Greek dishes with a modern edge, there are rave reviews for the saganaki cheese with honey and oregano, the taramasalata dip sprinkled with fresh mullet roe, the rich moussaka and don’ forget the watermelon marinated in ouzo.

Meet the Greek (85 The Grand Parade, Brighton Le Sands) The Mougios family have been long standing restaurant owners in the Brighton Le Sands area for over 30 years. Their latest venture is “MEET THE GREEK”, a fantastic, ambient taverna providing delicious, good quality, simple village style Greek food in a super friendly environment. They offer a range of delicious mezedes including some of the best oktapodi (marinated and char grilled with rigani) outside of Greece. Daily specials include Kakavia (Greek style fisherman’s soup) on a Thursday. Well worth the visit!!

Parea Greek Taverna (46-48 Rocky Point Road, Kogarah) Parea Greek Tavern has a wonderful homely relaxed and friendly atmosphere – it is just like you are eating in a family home. They offer a great range of mezedes, pitas, souvlaki and other roasted meats. They also have a wonderful banquet, which starts at $38 per person.

Diethnes Greek Restaurant (336 Pitt Street, Sydney) Speaking of institutions, I don’t think you could talk about Greek Restaurants in Sydney, without a mention of Diethnes. Wonderfully welcoming and very old school (my parents used to visit here in the 1970s – and they swear it hasn’t changed a bit) Diethnes offers all of the classic Greek dishes from slow cooked home style lamb casserole to wonderfully smokey grilled octopus and moorish fried eggplant. A great place for homely food and a day or night out in Sydney city.

Welcome

Καλώς ορίσατε! When Kat met her now husband at a New Year’s Eve party, little did she know how much it would change her life – especially the culinary aspects! Kat’s mother in law was a phenomenal talent in the kitchen; creating all of the classic Greek favourites but also regional dishes from her home Island of Zakynthos. Regretting not recording the recipes of her own Grandmother’s, Kat was not going to miss the opportunity to record the recipes and stories of her mother in law Sophia. Starting out as a personal project to document her family’s recipes, Mulberry Pomegranate has become a widely read guide to the Greek Mediterranean way of life. Read more

Spring is in the air and the freshly caught octopu Spring is in the air and the freshly caught octopus is at its very best!

Here is a super easy family recipe for grilled octopus the Greek way; lightly charred and left to soak in a gentle bath of lemon, extra virgin olive oil, smoked red pepper and aromatic oregano.

Serve simply with good hortiatiko bread to soak up all the delicious dressing, and a little ouzo, with plenty of ice on the side and a little chilled water.

You will need:

1 octopus, cleaned
3 medium garlic cloves
A few cloves
1 glass of white or rose wine
Greek extra virgin olive oil, to taste
Greek Oregano (rigani) to taste
Smoked red pepper flakes
Juice of 1 – 2 lemons

Instructions

Place the clean octopus in a pot, add the garlic cloves, whole cloves, wine and olive oil. Cover. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 30 minutes.

Remove from the pot, at this point you can remove the skin if desired and then cut into pieces.

Combine the extra virgin olive oil, rigani, smoked red pepper flakes and lemon juice. You can also add a little crushed garlic. Mix well and set aside.

Heat the barbecue on medium-high, before laying down the octopus pieces on the grill. Barbecue the octopus pieces on both sides until lightly charred.

Add the octopus pieces to a serving bowl that contains the dressing and mix well.

The octopus benefits from a good soak in the dressing before serving, but do make sure to serve while still warm.
